Schools told to act on ‘transgender bullying’

Greg Hurst, Education Editor

Also note: This includes sexist, racist and homophobic bullying, as well.

Children who engage in “transphobic” bullying in the playground or classroom could be guilty of a hate crime and investigated by police under new government guidance. Pupils could be expelled and their parents forced to attend counselling if they refuse to accept that such behaviour is wrong.

The detailed guidance, running to 46 pages, tells schools how to deal with transphobic bullying, defined as bullying stemming from a hatred or fear of people who are transgender — an umbrella term for people whose sense of gender or gender identity is seen as different from typical norms.

From the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (November 25, 2009):

"Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender patients face the compounded impact of decreased access to care coupled with clinician bias toward those LGBT patients who do receive medical attention. As noted by the widely respected Healthy People 2010 Companion Document for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health, '… a significant barrier to LGBT people accessing needed care is the lack of provider LGBT competency and the discrimination toward people of other sexual orientation or gender identity that frequently is encountered in the health care system.'”

US: New study released regarding LGBT youth in juvenile courts [Nov. 21st, 2009|02:17 pm]

Hidden injustice: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth in juvenile courts
The Hill
November 18, 2009
By Jody Marksamer, Staff Attorney & Youth Project Director, National Center for Lesbian Rights

*See full report here: http://www.equityproject.org/pdfs/hidden_injustice.pdf

For more than 20 years, the juvenile justice system has steadily become more punitive in how it treats youth accused of delinquent offenses. In some jurisdictions, the pendulum is slowly starting to swing back, with reform efforts underway to develop more fair and effective juvenile courts. Notably absent from these efforts, however, has been a focus on the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth.

The lack of professional guidance for juvenile justice professionals working with these youth is cause for concern. According to a 2009 study by Ceres Policy Research, LGBT youth comprise close to 12% of the overall population of youth in juvenile detention facilities. Despite this compelling statistic, many juvenile justice professionals pay scant—if any—attention to LGBT youth.

A report released this week by the Equity Project, a collaboration of Legal Services for Children, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and the National Juvenile Defender Center, aims to fill the gap in professional guidance for those working with this often-hidden population. The report, Hidden Injustice: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth in Juvenile Courts, is the first comprehensive effort to examine the experiences of LGBT youth in juvenile courts nationwide.

Smith questions [Feb. 15th, 2008|02:05 pm]
gamehen

Is anybody here from Smith?  What's the ftm/gender variant climate like there?  Are there active clubs and organizations?  Are there many transitioning folks on campus?

I'm not looking for specific names or outings - I've just been trying to do a little research, but the edu website offers little by the way of specific trans information.

suggestions of things to tie in to a gender socialization lecture [Jan. 24th, 2008|06:21 pm]

machiko3377
[Current Mood |workingworking]

Hey all. I've gotten tapped to do a last minute lecture in a Sociology of Gender course on socialization. I'm going to do a bit of bare bones stuff - what is socialization, how it occurs, etc., but I also want to add in a bit of my trans experience of re-socialization that takes place when one lives as their chosen gender. Does anyone have any suggestions of sources, readings, ideas, etc. of things to talk about? The class is very loosely organized, so I'm thinking a lot of discussion is going to happen. This is really the first time opening up and identifying as trans in front of a class, so I don't want to look foolish.
Thanks in advance for any input you can add!
Jay
